RMT9520N–The Circus Maximus was an ancient Roman chariot racing stadium and mass entertainment venue located in Rome, Italy. It was the first and largest stadium in ancient Rome and its later Empire, measuring 2,037 ft long and 387 ft wide, accommodating over 150,000 spectators. One end of the track was more open than the other, as this was where the chariots lined up to begin the race.

RMWH8HWT–Racing in Roman Lincolnshire. This 4th century mosaic from Horkstow almost certainly depicts racing, since only one man stands in each chariot. In battle an archer or spearman would be beside him, if the Romano-British still used war-chariots, itself most doubtful. The saddled horse being led by his reins has a distinctly Arab look, which lends a small amount of colour to the tradition that the Romans imported specialised racehorses to Britain. RMW812M4–A roman racing chariot, built for speed and spectacle, not battle, used in one of the most popular Persian, Greek and Roman sports. Chariot racing was dangerous to both drivers and horses with a risk of serious injury or death, but these dangers added to the excitement and interest for spectators. A typical race featured 12 chariots lined up abreast and when the race began, it would have resembled a stampede. Because of this crowded field, one of the most frequent risks on the racetrack was 'shipwrecks,' as the Romans called them — when chariots would tumble and crash on the track.

RMW812FB–In 55 BC, Julius Caesar decided to make an expedition to Britain. He gathered a fleet consisting of eighty transport ships, sufficient to carry two legions, that he initially tried to land at Dubris (Dover), a natural harbour identified as a suitable landing place. However, when he came in sight of shore, the massed forces of the Britons gathered on the overlooking hills and cliffs dissuaded him from landing and the fleet sailed along the coast to an open beach. Having been tracked all the way along the coast by the British cavalry and chariots, the landing was opposed. To make matters worse,
