Devil’s Chocolate Fudge Cake : Murder House Halloween Cake

halloween murder house cake - devils food cake and fudge frosting

Halloween!!! its that time of the year again… There’s bones and skeletons around every nook and corner! Can you believe we couldn’t find a pumpkin for carving :O If you know me, you probably know that I have a thing for everything true crime-ish! So its only fair I bring that into Halloween Baking this year! Murder House Halloween Cake, thats the theme I am sticking to for the halloween cake this year. The cake is all cocoa love in this Devil’s Chocolate Fudge Cake, especially Black Cocoa, I used the one from King Arthur.

To continue with the theme, the cake is a Rich Devil’s Food cake. The Devil’s Chocolate Fudge Cake is frosted and filled with luscious dark chocolate fudge frosting. The bones and skeleton sprinkles are homemade, very similar to the ones I made for the Easter Carrot Cake. You can find the recipe for the homemade royal icing sprinkles here in the DIY Sprinkles. Grave soil for the cake is Homemade Chocolate soil, you can find the recipe for that here.

Instructions

Royal Icing Bones & Skeleton Sprinkles

  1. Follow the instructions from the DIY post. Instead of using colours just use plain white and draw away some bones! they don't have to be perfect.

Devil's Food Cake

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F / 180 C degrees, grease and line the cake tins with parchment paper.

  2. In a small bowl, add the hot water and coffee powder and keep it aside.

  3. Sift the flour, black cocoa and baking powder in a separate bowl.

  4. In a bowl fitted with paddle attachment of a stand mixer. Add the butter, sugar and oil in the bowl and beat until light and fluffy.

  5. Add and beat one egg at a time. Add the melted chocolate

  6. Add the dry ingredients in batches alternating with the hot coffee and the milk to the flour.

  7. Mix the batter completely and scrape the sides to ensure the ingredients are fully incorporated.

  8. Divide the batter into 3 batches and bake each for about 20 minutes. Once baked, let it cool on a cooling rack.

Chocolate Fudge Frosting

  1. Add the butter and half of the icing sugar and beat until light.

  2. Sift the black cocoa, rest of the icing sugar and whisk. Slowly add milk to desired consistency

  3. If the frosting feels too thick, add more milk or cream. If it is runny or too thin add more icing sugar.

Assembly

  1. On a cake board, add a dollop of chocolate fudge frosting. Place a layer of cake and add a layer of frosting on top of the cake.

  2. Repeat this for all layers. Crumb coat around the cake, let it chill in the refrigerator for 25-30 mins.

  3. Once the cake is cool and set, it's easier to cut out parts as needed. I cut out 2 rectangles for graves.

  4. Add some chocolate dirt that you made, add a few bones and skeletons

  5. Decorate as you wish and sky is the limit! make it creepy and make it spooky! afterall it is a murder house! I also added some bone sprinkles in a box to make it like a suitcase filled with body parts!!

  6. Chill for 30 mins and serve!
