In fair Verona, where we lay our scene… there’s a very famous building that has become something of a tourist point of interest in Italy. This is the balcony where Juliet pined for her love in Shakespeare’s romance Romeo & Juliet with the famous line “Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?”

The balcony where Juliet supposedly spoke these words in Shakespeare’s play is located in the centre of Verona, connected to a building called, sure enough, La Casa di Giulietta (House of Juliet). The house used to be the home of the Capello family, who inspired the Bard to create the Capulets and their ill-fated feud with the Montagues in the world’s most romantic play, which is known in Italian as Romeo e Giulietta.

Nowadays, the place has become a pilgrimage site for people wanting to honour Juliet and every year she receives thousands of letters asking her for advice in affairs of the heart. These letters are answered by a local group of volunteers in Verona.

Another interesting fact about this tourist site in Verona is that there is also a Juliet statue in the courtyard of the Juliet House, and the tradition has arisen of visitors to Verona touching her right breast to be lucky in love. Many tourists also choose to leave graffiti and heart-shaped chewing gum on the walls to declare their love.
