Regarding homeowners insurance: I live in Martesia, and had to get citizens homeowners insurance at the cost of over $9000. I went through the Squeeze insurance brokers. They look for insurance and give you your choice based on cost and coverage. They recommended to me that I get wind mitigation inspection. I had purchased the hurricane fabric for all of my windows this year. That cut my cost down from $9000 to $4000 plus the inspection fee of $75. Last year I tried to get the wind mitigation, but the inspector did not like how one window had the shutters placed and so I did not get any wind mitigation credit at that time. If you are purchasing windows, but you have hurricane shutters or hurricane screening/fabric for your windows do not let the window installers talk you into impact resistant windows because they’re not needed if you already have the correct shutters or Hurricane fabric installed.See more…

Forgive my frustrated rant regarding homeowner's insurance. I've just set up new homeowner's policy for my home that has accordion shutters on all openings except the front door. The insurance company has downgraded my wind mitigation rating and premium reduction credit from the previous company's for not having shutters for that front door. When my Lennar home was built in 2010 storm shutters were supplied but not for the front door. And when I upgraded to accordion shutters a few years ago no suggestion was made by the installers that I should also have shutters available for the front door in order to get maximum wind mitigation credit. I assumed (Hah!) that the front door which has a solid core and opens outward to prevent being blown in by the wind was proper and sufficient protection for a non-glazed opening. Turns out that's the case **only** if I can provide documentation that the unshuttered door meets the necessary protection standards. Unfortunately the door sub-contractors Lennar utilized in 2010 are no longer used by Lennar. And Lennar no longer has any records of my home's construction particulars. So I am unable to access documentation that hopefully might demonstrate that the door is up to whatever specifications would satisfy the insurer. When looking around my neighborhood now I don't see front doors with shutter mounting hardware installed around the opening. Not even for those who have glass panels in the front door. So it appears it's not common knowledge that one must have shutters for front doors to get maximum wind mitigation credit.
