The latest entry in the venerable Quake series, the ad-supported, browser-based Quake Live, enters public beta testing on February 24, according to a newly revised splash page on the game's official site.

Alongside an almost-unrecognizable countdown clock, and a brief snippet of text telling players that the game is "coming at you live" next Tuesday, developer id Software also offers the page's striking new Quake Live logo (see above) as a free wallpaper download.

Though details of how the firm will conduct the test have yet to appear, the prominence of the word "open" indicates that the game -- though not officially finished -- will be available to any member of the public willing to agree to whatever Terms of Service id's lawyers have cooked up.
