The best vegetarian traditional Romanian food

Romanians love pork, it’s true. But there’s more to the local cuisine than that! Discover the vegetarian dishes: salads, purees, soups & main courses!

My all-time favorites are the following classics of the Romanian cuisine:

  • Fasole bătută – „beaten beans”: white beans puree with a tint of garlic and a bit of cooked onion in tomato sauce. To be spread on bread.
  • Salată de vinete – „eggplant salad”: fresh eggplant grilled on the exterior, peeled, cut into the smallest finest pieces, stirred with sunflower oil. Optionally mixed with red onion. To be spread on bread.
  • Zacuscă – a local type of ratatouille: a chunky spread made out of a mix of cooked vegetables (eggplant, tomatoes, red bell pepper, onion, the optional carrot). To be spread on bread.
  • Ciorbă de legume – vegetables soup (not the cream type of soup, but with actual vegetables bits), served with the optional sour cream and chilly pepper.
  • Tocăniță/ciulama de ciuperci cu mămăligă – mushrooms stew with polenta as a side dish.
  • If you don’t mind diary products then you absolutely have to try the papanași – a fantastic desert, made of two doughnuts deep fried, crunchy and delicious, with sour cream on top and sweet-sour jam. A portion usually is enough for two!

Join me on a private food tour of Bucharest and try out these delicious dishes and much more!

Poftă bună! Enjoy!!!
