Rosaceae

Malus hupehensis 'Arie Mauritz' Malus hupehensis 'Arie Mauritz'

Strong, small tree with a broad ovoid crown, up to about 7 m. When young, the crown has a strong, upright growth pattern, it becomes round when mature. The trunk grows to a good size. In May the pink-white flowers bloom out of light pink buds. The flowers are followed by small, shiny red crab apples. Bears abundant fruit, but this is hardly a nuisance given their small size. Healthy cultivar that is not susceptible to scab or mildew. Came out as the best crab apple in PPO Lisse’s culture value survey of avenue trees. Jan P. Mauritz named the tree after his father.
