What is a roman chariot?

Chariot racing was a very popular sport in Ancient Rome. Teams of horses were fixed to the front of the chariot and they could pull the charioteer along at great speeds. Chariots would race laps around a course with the winner being the fastest to complete the laps. It was very common for chariots to crash!

The Romans originated in the city of Rome, in modern-day Italy. However, the Romans ruled countries across the globe - including Great Britain - which was called the Roman Empire. This was the largest Empire in ancient history.

The Empire had a huge effect on the language, culture and history of countries in Europe, the Middle East and even Northern Africa. Ancient Rome had a huge impact on many areas of contemporary life, such as engineering and government. Rome was founded in c.753 BC and this is considered the beginning of the Roman Empire, which lasted until AD 536 when Rome fell to Belisarius.
