Transgender celebrities are calling out comedian Jess Hilarious after she posted a transphobic rant on social media.

On Saturday, the comic posted a response to a video of a trans TikToker, Blessing Rose, who was herself responding to a transphobic TikTok comment. “You don’t own periods, you don’t own womanhood,” Blessing Rose told the commenter in the original video. “You experience both and both are different for every person but as a cis woman, it doesn’t belong to you, so you can’t gatekeep it.”

Jess Hilarious began her response by saying, “Who the fuck is gonna stand up for us?” clarifying that by “us” she meant “real women.” The comedian proceeded to refer to trans women as having a “delusion,” stating, “What is the difference between you and someone who has been diagnosed to be mentally insane? The only difference is you don’t have a straitjacket on.”

“How are you projecting your anger on real women because we are the gatekeepers?” she continued. “We are the gatekeepers for periods. We the only ones that fucking bleed, honey. We the only ones that can give birth. We make y’all people. We make y’all. Y’all come from us. You can’t be us; you will never. You’re chasing something you’ll never ever get.”

Rather than referring to trans women getting periods, however, Blessing Rose was pointing out that trans men, nonbinary people, and others who don’t identify with womanhood still get periods. (Also, the International Association for Premenstrual Disorders website notes that although trans women do not have menstrual cycles, some “do report PMS like symptoms when using hormone therapy,” citing the need for further research in the area.)

Reality star, actress, and activist Ts Madison seemingly subtweeted about the incident on Saturday, writing, “There are sooooo many ‘Real’ women that get mistaken for being ‘transgender’ Women and that’s where a lot of the anger comes from…. I do hope they take a Good look at how Transphobia affects ALL women……”

Madison also posted a video to Instagram in which Jess Hilarious admitted that she was previously mistaken for a trans woman, and that a male celebrity had offered to fly her out to have sex with him.

Other notable figures similarly took to social media to school the comedian. Activist and writer Raquel Willis tweeted, “Cis folks need to understand that trans folks are not side characters. Baby, we are main characters too. Your intense desire to be the default will be your downfall whether you realize it or not.”

“The thing is many trans folks acknowledge how restrictive gender and sex can be and we actively fight to create the lives we deserve despite these boxes,” she added. “Cis folks could learn from us instead of accepting restriction, wallowing in insecurity, and leading unfulfilling lives.”

Actress Angelica Ross took a different take, tweeting, “The trans girls are going to show Jess a new way to bleed. We call it reading for BLOOD. And I PROMISE you girls don’t want no part of this. I been trying to keep the gurls calm but it’s only so much I can do.”

Later, Ross posted a screenshot of a DM that the comedian had sent her, with the caption, “how HILARIOUS.”

Although Jess Hilarious has yet to retract her video or publicly respond. Setting popcorn-worthy takedowns aside, we're grateful to Angelica, Raquel, and Ts for the reminder that transphobia hurts us all, and that the real "delusion" here is a cis woman's confusion of her trans sisters as adversaries rather than invaluable allies in the struggle against patriarchy.
