The 28 year-old from Cumbria, who is trying to reach the South Pole, made a bid to record the quickest 100 kilometres (62 miles) ever completed by kite ski.

She covered the distance, along with her Norwegian co-adventurer Niklas Norman, in 7 hours and 55 minutes, benefiting from favourable winds.

Temperatures fell to -48 Celsius during the record attempt.

She hopes Guinness World Records officials, who have been sent evidence of the bid via satellite for verification, will confirm her journey as a new world record.

Skelton is trying to cover 500 miles to the South Pole by ski, kite-ski and bike, raising money for Sport Relief in the process.

Having set off from 86 degrees South, she has just reached the half-way point, and is resting before trying to complete the challenge.

She has been treated for blisters, but remains optimistic that she will reach the South Pole under her own steam.

"I know I’ve got a lot of hard work still to do but at least I am closer to the end than the beginning now," she said.

"Every single day here is tough so all I can do is take each one at a time and get through it."

During her trek, she also hopes to set a record for the longest ever journey by bicycle on snow.

The Blue Peter presenter has previously set a record for the longest solo kayak ever completed on the Amazon.

Last year, she did a high wire walk between the chimneys of the Battersea Power Station, also for Sport Relief.
