Miss Black Staten Island 2018: Meet contestants competing for the crown

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The 2018 Miss Black Staten Island/Miss Black Richmond County Pageant will be held Sunday, July 29, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bloomfield.

"The Miss Black Staten Island/Miss Black Richmond County was founded by the Staten Island Urban League in 1971," said Karyn Turner, executive director of Kaleidoscope Mode, Inc., the 501(c)3 non-profit organization now producing the event.

"The pageant highlights young women of color, with a strong emphasis on pursuing a higher education to instill lifelong experiences of empowerment, success, and qualitative leadership."

Four young women will be vying for the titles of Miss Richmond County and Miss Staten Island: Genesis Hamm, Jakai Hines, Jana Badmus, and Khiasia Velazquez.

The reigning Miss Black Staten Island is Kalima McCollum, a recent Curtis High School graduate and rising college freshman.

The 2018 scoring will be based on:

INTERVIEW:  25 percent

SWIMSUIT:  15 percent

TALENT:  35 percent

EVENING WEAR & ON-STAGE QUESTION:  25 percent

Kaleidoscope Mode, Inc. is a Staten Island based 501c3 nonprofit organization that operates recreational and educational programs.

Their mission is to be inclusive and focus mainly on young women. All nationalities and religions are encouraged to participate in their programs, which endeavors to instill tolerance and acceptance of others.
