Where is Timisoara, Romania?
Situated near the Hungarian and Serbian borders, Timisoara is in the western part of Romania. It is often an overlooked destination but should not be. Often called Little Vienna or the City of Flowers, Timisoara is famous for its historical buildings, umbrella street, and parks.

Looking for a tour of Timisoara?
1. Union Square (Piața Unirii)
Union Square is one of three main squares in Timisoara. It was the first square we visited and a great place to start your Timisoara tour.
Union Square is also called Dome Square, the oldest square in Timisoara.
In Union Square, you will find the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, St. George’s Catholic Cathedral, the Baroque Palace (Art Museum), the plague column, plenty of cafes, and the Brück House.
The buildings in Union Square are so colorful and detailed.
Be sure to go for a ride in the self-driving car in front of the Timisoara Art Museum. You can hop on and go for a quick, free spin.
2. Brück House (Palatul Brück)
Brück House is a four-story building located in Union Square. It is one of the most beautiful and well-known buildings in Timisoara.
What makes this building unique is its Art Nouveau style and vibrant colors. The ground floor of the building has always had a pharmacy. Be sure to go in and check out the interior of the pharmacy.
3. Liberty Square (Piața Libertății)
After leaving Union Square, the next square you will stumble upon is Liberty Square.
In Liberty Square, you will find another plague statue called St. Mary and St. John of Nepomuk Monument. There is also the Old City Hall and Military Casino.
4. Umbrella Street
Right off Liberty Square is our favorite street in Timisoara, Umbrella Street.
This pedestrian street has a colorful umbrella canopy guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
Umbrella street is probably the best place in the city for photos.
5. Victory Square (Piața Victoriei)
Victory Square is the last of the three squares in Timisoara. It is not far from Liberty Square and has landscaping with beautiful flowers.
This square is the central square in Timisoara.
Victory Square has the National Theater and Opera at one end and the Metropolitan Cathedral at the other.
If it is a hot day, pop into Gelato di Bruno for some delicious gelato.
6. Orthodox Metropolitan Church (Catedrala Mitropolitană Ortodoxă)
The Metropolitan Cathedral is a Romanian Orthodox church. Both the inside and outside of the church are beautiful.
The interior is impressive with lots of gold, so be sure to go inside for a visit.
7. Bega River
After visiting the Metropolitan Cathedral, you can walk through Cathedral Park to get on the Bega River ferry.
The city of Timisoara has boats that go up and down the Bega River.
The price for a one-way ferry ride is 1 RON ($0.21). The ferry is cheap, and it makes for a fun adventure.
We took the ferry from the Sfânta Maria dock to the Vasile Pârvan dock. Vasile Pârvan is the stop if you would like to visit Roses Park.
If not, you can stay on the ferry and continue your journey on the Bega River.
8. Roses Park (Parcul Rozelor)
Roses Park is right along the Bega River. It hosts several festivals and has a summer theater.
We visited in June, and there were not many roses, so it is probably best to go in spring.
There is no admission fee to enter Roses Park.
9. Mioriţa Timisoara
After a busy day of sightseeing, you will probably be looking for a place to try authentic Romanian cuisine.
We recommend Miorita. It is a traditional Romanian restaurant in the Old Town of Timisoara.
The restaurant has outdoor seating and plenty of indoor seats. If you choose to sit outside, make sure to go inside to check out the unique interior.
We got sarmale with mămăligă (polenta) and sour cream. Sarmale is considered the Romanian national dish. It is cabbage leaves stuffed with meat and rice.
The sarmale with a side of mămăligă is 35 RON ($7.21).
10. Timișoreana Beer
Our last thing to do in Timisoara is to visit Timișoreana Beer.
This restaurant is next to the brewery and serves beer and delicious food. We tried the local beer and a Romanian sampler platter.
The sampler platter had several Romanian dishes such as sarmale, mămăligă, and Romanian bean stew. Plus, it came with an assortment of meat like ribs, sausages, pork chops, and bacon. The platter also had pickles, potatoes, and onions.
It was plenty of food for two to three people.
The Romanian sampler platter and beer were 157 RON ($32.53).
