South Dakota NRCS Announces ActNow funding for Windbreak and Shelterbelt Renovations

NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE (NRCS), Huron, S.D., April 6, 2023 – The United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) NRCS serving South Dakota is announcing a round of ActNow funding for Union, Lincoln, Minnehaha, Moody, and Brookings Counties.

This opportunity is a special allocation of limited funds and will be distributed on a first come, first serve, basis. The focus of these ActNow funds are for Windbreak and Shelterbelt Renovations, with priority given to full renovations where removal of existing trees and new planting is needed. While applications are accepted year-round, applications for this ActNow opportunity are due by May 12, 2023.
 
“There’s been a need for windbreak and shelterbelt renovation in the area for some time. After several large sustained wind events, like the derecho, and continued pest pressure, that need has only grown in recent years. With this unique opportunity we hope to expedite the application and contracting process, and get the ball rolling on much needed windbreak renovations,” said Hannah Grimm, District Conservationist, Elk Point, South Dakota.
