If you were in the Pilot Hill or Coloma area Sunday at about 6 p.m. you might have noticed a blue laser beam projected high into the sky.
Witnesses took photos and put a call out over social media in hopes of finding an explanation. Rumors went wild that it was aliens, someone targeting aircraft overhead or a film crew working on a music video. Turns out it was the making of a music video for Brazilian DJ Alok, who is the fifth-ranked DJ in the world by DJ Magazine and known for using lasers in his performances.
DJ Alok wasn’t in El Dorado County, according to Tim Anderson, president of Folsom-based Nu Salt Laser International, but part of his soon-to-be released music video was filmed off Pedro Hill Road. Anderson said one of his products, the Laser Space Cannon, was used in a segment of the video, which was filmed at his family’s property. Nu Salt Laser International bills it as the “brightest full-color laser in the world,” with 1,000 watts of solid-state lasers that collimate into one beam.
The Laser Space Cannon was seen as far away as Folsom, Anderson said, adding that he had notified some neighbors the laser would be used; a helicopter was also part of the production.
Calls still came in to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, according to Sgt. Eric Palmberg, with deputies dispatched to investigate and verify an FAA permit had been granted to shine such a powerful light or laser skyward.
A neighbor who did not want to be identified said she and her husband first spotted the beam driving home from Cool and then pulled up to the Pedro Hill Road house to see what “looked like a compact spotlight shooting way up into the sky.”
