Food Facts Lab 3️⃣! 🍊Lets talk a little bit about Citrus🍋 In the realm of Citrus – encompassing various species under the umbrella of Citrus spp. – lies a realm of flavor, nutrition, and postharvest intricacies that demand serious contemplation. 🌱 From the initial moment of harvest to the culmination of consumption, a symphony of scientific factors orchestrates the journey. 🚜🧤The Harvesting Dilemma: The choice between manual handpicking and advanced mechanical harvesting involves a thorough understanding of fruit detachment forces and minimization of damage to the delicate fruit structures. The final destinatiin or use of the fruits also plays an important role. 📦 Packaging Precision: Optimal storage begins with the choice of packaging materials – mesh bags or cardboards. This decision hinges on their ability to facilitate controlled gaseous exchange, an essential factor in postharvest management. 🌡️ Temperature and Humidity Harmony: Achieving the ideal storage environment is an art. The temperature range of 7-13°C (44-55°F) and a humidity level of 85-90%RH ensure the delicate balance between moisture loss and avoiding microbial proliferation. Oranges hold strong for 2 weeks to 2 months, while lemons hold their zest for 1-6 weeks. 🍊🍋🍽️🚣♀️Nutrient Complexity: Beyond their tantalizing taste, Citrus spp. are treasure troves of nutrients. From the immunity-boosting properties of Vitamin C to the digestive benefits of fibers and the intricate web of antioxidants, they contribute holistically to well-being. 🌬️💧Fun fact: the flotation phenomenon: the ethereal sight of citrus fruits afloat is attributed to the anatomical marvel of air-filled albedo pockets within the peel. These natural buoyancy mechanisms showcase the fusion of biology and physics in nature. 🍊🍋 #postharvest #fruitsandvegetables #fruitquality #foodquality #citrus #oranges #freshproduce #lemon #lime #CitrusScience #PostharvestInsights

Polarized light used to look at the insides of potato cells! This illumination technique is often used in geology so now on believe that sweet potatoes rock 😎 All the small bubbles looking like sleigh bells are starch granules! You can also see multicolour confettis floating around! These are structures containing carotenoids and they really look like they’re ready for the holidays! Lots of different plants, like potato, ginger, turmeric and mango, transform the sugar they made by photosynthesis into starch. This starch is stored in specialized organs like grains, roots or tubers for later use. Sweet potatoes are actually root tubers (modified roots) filled with storage cells called amyloplasts which accumulate starch! When environmental conditions are harsh, like during winter or droughts, the sweet potato plant uses the carbs it stored inside modified roots and feed on them nutrients. Sweet potatoes, or Ipomoea batatas in latin, are not only rich in carbs but also in beta-carotene, which is a precursor of vitamin A. They also contain tons of vitamins C, B and E as well as calcium, iron and potassium! They’re also super rich in fibres so your bowels will thank you (or not, you know it better than I do haha). Unlike orange sweet potatoes, purple-coloured sweet potatoes contain anthocyanins which give them their colour and have antioxidant properties. China is the largest producer of sweet potato and right after comes Vietnam. It’s also largely grown in developing countries, accounting for over 95% of the total production. Sweet potatoes are quite resistant to cold and can even be cultivated at altitudes as high as 2500m! Credit: Chloé Savard #health #fruits #productivity #research #science

🍇In years with abundant rainfall or floods, it frequently happens that the subsoil makes important reserves of water available, which induce vigorous vegetative activity in the vineyards, at the same time as an average humidity higher than normal. In this situation, the grapes may be more exposed to oxidative phenomena or microbiological contamination and their protection right from harvest is of fundamental importance. 👉🏼 ALEATAN RH is a specific antioxidant for application on grapes and must. Thanks to the balance between its constituents, it preserves and enhances the varietal aromatic characteristics of the grapes and musts, carrying out an antioxidant and antimicrobial action, oxidative enzyme inhibition, and SO2extraction effect reduction. Its use reduces the content of dissolved oxygen in the must, avoiding the oxidation of the natural aromatic and phenolic component of the grape, protecting the varietal aromatic character and reducing the addiction of SO2 in the pre-fermentation phases, with less production of acetaldehyde and H2S during alcoholic fermentation and a real improvement in the organoleptic quality of the wine. 👉🏼ALEATAN VINTAGE WHITE is an adjuvant based on purified gallotannin. It prevents oxidation and inactivates oxidative enzymes, in particular laccases and tyrosinases. Its use allows you to stabilize the oxidation-reduction potential of the must and wine, protecting their color and structure. At the same time, it carries out a preventive action against oxidation, thanks to the phenolic structuring of the wines, allowing the reduction of use of SO2. #aleaevolution #enology #antioxidant #

Akamatsutake mushrooms, also known as large bulbous cap mushrooms and burgundy bulbous cap mushrooms, are grown in Europe, North America, and Asia, and do not require a high level of living environment, as they can be grown in forests, garbage dumps, wood chips, and cow and horse manure piles, and can be artificially cultivated. Akamatsutake mushrooms are white and fat, with large heads weighing several kilograms. The tops of the seedlings are white, and when they grow up, the tops will appear reddish-brown, wine-colored, or dark brown. Akamatsutake contains about 25% protein, active polysaccharides, phenols, sterols and other active ingredients, which are beneficial to scavenging free radicals in the body, antioxidant and hypoglycemic effects. #agriculture #shiitake #mushrooms #mushroom

The most useful tropical fruit trees Morinda citrifolia - Noni Tree is a tropical fruit tree that grows year-round in the Pacific Islands and for over 2000 years has been used for its many healthful benefits. This is a perfect tree with large, beautiful, ornamental leaves. Flowers are small, white, growing from a fleshy structure. The nectar is favorite food of honey-eaters. Blooms and fruits year round. Fruits are oval, medium 4-7cm, at first green, turning light yellow or white when ripe with many seeds. The fruits are edible, but don't have a nice taste or smell. The plant grows well on any soil, even sandy or rocky. Apart from saline conditions, the plant also can withstand drought. Noni can be easily grown in container, tolerates shade, will fruit in a pot. Extremely cold sensitive (55F minimum). Keep protected during winter. Renowned ethnobotanists, scientists, and medical professionals have discovered that noni juice works on a cellular level and affects nearly every system in the body. This juice is also a rich source of antioxidants and can help support the immune system and help cells more readily absorb nutrients. Every part of the plant is used medicinally! https://lnkd.in/eBzwdBCY #Morindacitrifolia #NoniTree #medicinalplants #usefulplants #ethnomedicalplants

Be brighter with us! Do you know why the shrimp has such a rich and bright color, while the caviar of high-quality fish is bright orange and elastic? The secret is simple - it all depends on the quality of the feed, protein content and a substance such as carotenoids - natural organic pigments synthesized by bacteria, fungi, algae, higher plants and coral polyps are colored yellow, orange or red. Our Artemia just contains such carotenoids. When it is added to the diet, shrimp acquire the same bright, more appetizing shade, like fish caviar. #artemia#brineshrimpeggs#hatcheries#shrimpfarms#prawns#shrimps#shrimpfood#aquafeed#arsal#ArsalRobotics
