Does a ring around the moon mean that rain is soon?
The science behind moon rings
You may have heard the saying ‘A ring around the moon, means rain is soon”, but what does science say about these moon rings? Many saw a ring around the moon, also called a moon halo, with the recent full moon over Oklahoma.  As moonlight shines through a thin layer of cloud cover made up of ice crystals, the moonlight is then reflected into a halo. This is the same process as light from a flashlight moving through a thin plastic lens, and then when you shine the light on a wall a halo surrounds the light.  As far as rain, in advance of a large storm high cirrus clouds are common.  If the timing is right, a halo can be seen around the moon before the rain.  This would verify the saying ‘ A ring around the moon means rain is soon’.Of course high clouds can still be present without a rain storm on the way, so this saying isn’t always the case.
