Milan clubs unveil their ‘Cathedral’ to replace their San Siro icon

December 22 – The core design scheme for the new stadium that will replace the Milan’s San Siro as the home for AC Milan and InterMilan has been chosen.

The Populous’ project – named ‘The Cathedral’ – will regenerate the area in the San Siro neighbourhood, currently occupied by the Meazza Stadium, via the creation of a new district dedicated to sport and leisure. This will include a new 50,000 sqm green area.

In total there will be more than 110,000 sqm of green areas (40% of the total square footage) with the parking lot, which represents 27% of the total area in the current scheme, now to be moved to a dedicated underground area.

The new stadium project has been a long time in gestation, however both clubs said they want the process accelerated. A statement said the “next weeks will be dedicated to finalising the objectives and development process of Milan’s New Stadium.” The final project plan is expected to be presented for approval in mid-2022.

“The new San Siro will be the most beautiful stadium in the world for its strong identity and recognisability. An attractive arena, accessible and sustainable for the city of Milan that will facilitate the growth of the clubs and their global competitiveness,” said AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni.

‘The Cathedral’ will be carbon neutral and LEED-certified, promised Populous who said it will use cutting-edge technologies in terms of water and electricity usage, as well as noise control.

“The Cathedral is set to become one of the most iconic stadiums in the world. It will be a modern home to legendary clubs AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano and will become the heart of a new neighbourhood. It will celebrate the cultural heritage of Milan and it will be enjoyed by the Milanese population for many generations to come. A stadium of Milan and for Milan,” said Christopher Lee, Managing Director EMEA at Populous.

Alessandro Antonello, Corporate CEO at FC Internazionale, said: “The new district for sport and leisure and its 50,000sqm park will make San Siro the go-to neighbourhood for sport and entertainment.”
