Whether it’s a kid’s greatest wish or an adult wanting a loving companion, welcoming a pet into your home can be an exciting time. Although pets can be loads of fun to have around, they can equally be a lot of work and costly to take care of. So, although an adorable puppy might be top of mind when thinking of getting a pet, for your first one, you may want to opt for a more manageable critter that is of lower maintenance, especially if you have a busy schedule.

Luckily, there are tons of cute and interesting pets you can befriend that don’t require a lot of maintenance. From furry pets that like to cuddle to ones that can easily be housed in your apartment, you can select the perfect companion for your lifestyle. Whether you prefer furry friends like hamsters and Guinea Pigs, or reptiles such as snakes, Leopard Geckos and turtles.

Below, we are sharing some of the most low-maintenance animals that also make great pets. But please remember, just because a pet is low-maintenance doesn't mean it doesn't need constant proper care, including enough food, water, vet visits and other essentials.

Hamsters make a great first pet for your children! These furry ones are easy to take care of once you have set up their home. To make a happy hamster home, make sure to include a water bottle, food bowl and of course, a hamster wheel — hamsters love to get in their cardio! For food, these guys mainly eat pelleted food and dark leafy greens every other day.

Betta Fish

Getting a freshwater fish, like the Betta Fish, can be a lot easier to maintain than a saltwater fish. Due to their territorial nature, male Betta fish should be kept individually in one gallon of water, along with enough space left at the top of the tank so your Betta can breathe at the surface. To take care of your Betta, maintaining good water quality with regular water changes will help prolong a Betta’s lifespan.

Another favorite for kids! Guinea pigs are social animals that like daily interaction. For that reason, they also do well with other Guinea pigs. To care for these little guys, you won’t have to worry about grooming. They like to keep themselves clean and don’t typically need regular baths. Just make sure to have all the basics: cage, bedding, food and water.

Chinchilla

These cuties are gentle and have super soft fur. If you suffer from allergies, Chinchillas might be a good option for you since their coat is hypoallergenic. A Chinchilla’s habitat includes a well-ventilated cage, bedding, hiding boxes, toys, food and water.

Even though they are social and like to be with other Chinchillas, they prefer not to be held as often — making them low-maintenance. However, they do require special Chinchilla food and weekly dust baths to keep their fur clean.

Remember: It is illegal to house a chinchilla caught from the wild. You must adopt a domesticated chinchilla.

Turtle

There are a lot of different turtle species that range in lifespan, size and daily care. A popular one is the Painted Turtle which can grow to be 4 to 12 inches long. These can be kept in a terrarium and fed a few times throughout the week — so you won’t have to worry about daily feedings. The most important factor to keeping them thriving is providing a comfortable aquatic environment where the temperature and cleanliness of their habitat is well taken care of.

Snake

These slithery friends might be a little frightening to have if you are not comfortable around these reptiles. Nonetheless, they are super easy to care for as long as you keep them in a properly sized tank, maintain the tank at a comfortable temperature and feed them their preferred meals — this can depend on the snake, but they typically eat mice, rats or eggs.

Leopard Gecko

Leopard Geckos make great beginner pets. These geckos are kept in 15- to 20-gallon tanks that don't have to be thoroughly cleaned often. Instead, make sure to spot clean the tank daily for any feces, and disinfect it twice per month. For food, these geckos like to feed on crickets, waxworms, and sometimes mealworms. Although their food may not be appealing to handle, you won’t have to worry about feeding your adult gecko every day.

Bird

Ever considered getting a colorful bird as a pet? Depending on the type of bird that you select, they can be easy to take care of and don’t require a ton of interaction from humans. However, you can also get a bird that likes to socialize and hang out with the family. To build a happy bird cage, make sure that it is large enough for the specific bird that you have. Choose a cage that is double the width of your bird’s wingspan and that the bars of the cage are close together. They also enjoy eating a variety of foods which include seeds and nuts, pellets, green veggies and fruit.

Hermit Crab

Another low-key pet! These crabs can be kept in a humid, five gallon-terrarium. You’ll want to keep their habitat on the warmer side, along with a shallow saltwater dish where they can soak in. And of course, it’s important to include 3-5 empty shells within their habitat where they can fit into. Since they are smaller creatures, there is not much clean-up and their meals are pretty easy as well. They eat very slowly and mainly eat pellet food.
