How to Wear Eye Makeup With Glasses

At the Rio movie premiere in Los Angeles, Anne Hathaway hit the red carpet wearing a fringed purple mini dress and a killer pair of... glasses? That's right. Hathway was working the nerdy chic look as she waltzed past the cameras and clamoring reporters. This got us thinking about glasses and makeup and how to wear the two together; Anne may make it look easy, but what about the rest of us four-eyes? We took this question to makeup artist (and glasses-wearer) Troy Surratt for his pro tips.

Go graphic. Thickly-framed eyes can carry more makeup than thinly framed ones, says Surratt. For retro, black glasses, draw on a set of smoky eyes or apply winged liner. For thin, wire-rimmed glasses, stick to a more natural look. And no matter what kind of frames you wear, be sure to define your brows. "Since brows tend to arch over the rims of your glasses, it's extra important to make sure that they are well-kept and nicely groomed," says Surratt.

Brighten up. Lenses add shadows to the areas around the eyes, so its important to keep things light. Start by taking your optometrist up on that offer to add an anti-glare coating to your lenses to avoid glare—"This will give a more accurate appearance of your eye," says Surratt. Then, apply concealer to any dark circles and "dot a bit of shimmery powder near the tear ducts for a pretty light reflecting effect. This will keep eyes looking fresh and young behind lenses."

More is more. Since glasses can sometimes make your eyes look smaller, the absolutely-no-makeup option is kind of off the table. "At the very least, always apply black mascara to your upper and lower lashes for a full effect," Surratt says.
