He was born in Gossell, Kansas, son of the late Daniel V. and Adina (Voth) Unger, and raised in Newton, Kansas.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Unger.
Surviving are his loving wife of 57 years, Darleen; two children, whom he loved and admired, Navy Capt. Daniel V. Unger IV, Medical Corps, and wife Pam Pyle, M.D., of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Diane Unger Kinzer and husband Thomas E. Kinzer of Pilot Point, Texas; and the grandchildren he cherished, Daniel Zachary Unger, Faith Alice Unger and Thomas Alexander Kinzer. He also is survived by two brothers, Clifford Unger and wife Joan, and Emerson Unger and wife Karen; one sister, Jodi Flohrschutz and husband Keith; as well as loving nieces, nephews.
Dan retired as district manager for JCPenney in 1996 after a 42-year career that began in Emporia, Kansas. During his career, he received numerous awards and recognition for his leadership. He held various positions with JCPenney in Aurora, Colorado; Omaha, Nebraska; Salt Lake City, Utah; Spokane, Washington; Roanoke, Virginia and Atlanta, Georgia.
Dan had a very strong religious foundation and was an Elder of his church in many cities and always an involved and giving member of the church body.
Active in many civic, educational and charitable organizations, he served as a board member of the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center, Community Hospice of Northeast Florida Thrift Store, Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, The Gator Bowl Association, Cypress Village and Deerwood Rotary, of which he was a past president.
While serving on the University of Florida’s President’s Council, Dan and his managers established the JCPenney Eminent Scholar Chair of Retail Management. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the University of North Florida Foundation and was a member of the Order of the Dolphins of Jacksonville University.
He served on the advisory boards of the Salvation Army and St. Vincent’s Hospital, as well as on the Board of Governors of Epping Forest Yacht Club and Deerwood Club.
A Celebration of His Life will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, February 14, at Mandarin Presbyterian Church, 11844 Mandarin Road in Jacksonville, FL. The Rev. Kevin Pound will officiate.
