She was the talk of the nation after she was stripped off her Miss.Great Britain title following a steamy on-screen escapade on ITV's Love Island.

Once a beauty queen...: Zara Holland, 20, revealed she can still keep her sparkly diamond tiara despite being stripped off her Miss Great Britain title for having sex on-air

This may come as a surprise seeing as the Miss.Great Britain organisers were adamant about their decision to retain the title and hand it to first runner-up Deone Robertson.

A heavily signed petition on Change.org with more than 20,000 signatures might have had something to do with the conclusion of assets.

The petition was set up by Zara's fan Dell Bennett and he mentioned: 'As you are aware Zara Holland is Miss Great Britain and is on a reality TV show called Love Island, she is there to find love and it is not working out as much as she hoped.

'Recently Zara had a fumble which was aired on the show and now unfortunately this has cost her the title of Miss Great Britain. I think it is a harsh punishment stripping her of her title for a silly little mistake and for only being human.'

'I am aware that having a title like that comes with responsibilities and I for one think she has been absolutely amazing, she has shown she is a strong positive person, we have to remember she is still a young lady and what happened was only natural.

'I think she should be given a second chance as Miss Great Britain!'

The beauty told the new issue of OK! magazine: 'Before I even went into the villa, my mum said, "Don't sleep with anybody." So I let my mum down, and that really still upsets me.

Contrite: Zara has revealed she regrets her decision to have sex on TV because she let her mother down

'I haven't committed a crime, I haven't done anything to hurt anyone, but yes, I made this mistake. I've accepted that and we have to move forward now.'

Talking about her loss of the title, the reality star said: 'I still can't quite believe it now, because it's been such a massive part of my life and I've worked so hard for it. Losing the title was just the worst thing that's ever happened to me.

'The Miss Great Britain organisation didn't say anything to me. They wrote a permission letter to ITV2 saying, "We fully support Zara going into Love Island".'

Zara had previously said she didn't think there was anything wrong with having sex on television.

'I've done nothing wrong. All women have needs. There is nothing wrong with having sex on TV. I knew what I was signing up for - it is Love Island,' she explained.

'I am a 20-year-old girl who was in the moment. There are lots of girls my age who go out every week and do that, mine was just on national TV. I haven't committed a crime so why should I have my title taken from me? It's horrific.'

Zara Holland was shocked to discover her former flame and winner of last year's series, Max Morley had used her time on the island to vent that she had a 'boring' personality and a sex life to match.

But after quitting the show last week, she hit back at Max's claims, telling The Sun: 'He was horrible, God knows what happened or why he's blocked me on Twitter.'

Explaining that she thought things were going well after they went on a string of dates in December, she added: 'He was the dream I did still really fancy the pants off him.'

The starlet confessed that she wasn't sure why their relationship came to an end, but suggested he may have been struggling with commitment issues.

'I think he wasn't really ready for a relationship and it got to that point.... I don't know,' she reasoned.

Last month, Zara's ex Max - who famously dated Charlotte Crosby - expressed his shock that she had been chosen to enter the villa, telling The Daily Star: 'If she lets herself go she could be good, maybe… but if not then she is boring.'

He added: 'The sex was just on the same basis as her personality, nothing special or to write home about.'

But despite dating the starlet, it seems Max didn't know his ex too well as he went on to insist: 'She will absolutely not have sex on TV, there's not a chance.'

Zara's time in the Love Island villa was notoriously turbulent as she lamented that she couldn't seem to couple up with the right guys for her.

After sensing a connection with new contestant Alex Bowen, the star indulged in a steamy night of passion, which resulted in her losing her title as Miss Great Britain.

Days after she was told she had her crown revoked due to her 'disappointing' behaviour, she heard that her mother had fallen ill and left the show to be at her side.

Despite the fall out that came from her night of passion, Zara recently revealed that she does not regret her actions.

Speaking exclusively to the MailOnline she explained: 'Women like to have sex. I just personally have never had a one night stand before and a lot of women have one night stands and there's nothing wrong with sex and if you wake up in the morning and it makes you feel good.

'Sex is nothing to be ashamed of. We're all women but I just don't regret my actions, I just regret doing it on TV.'
