At some point in my life, I pinched the thin, delicate skin of my eyelid with an eyelash curler and haven't touched one since. A genius tip New York City-based Vincent Oquendo recently shared with me is making me reconsider using the tool again, though: When packing kits to send over to his celebrity clients for virtual appointments, Oquendo doesn't just throw in any lash curler. Hair color must be considered first.
For those with dark hair, like client actor Jurnee Smollett, Oquendo reaches for a curler in a light-colored metal, like silver or gold. His favorite is the Best of Beauty Award-winning Tweezerman ProCurl Eyelash Curler. Its rose-gold finish contrasts with dark hair, so you can see “it against the lashes a bit easier,” he says. You'll know exactly where the curler is going to clamp down and decrease your chances of pinching your lid. Another great option for those with dark hair is Kevyn Aucoin's silver The Eyelash Curler.
“If I'm a blonde or redhead, I might want to go for a more of a dark-toned eyelash curler," Oquendo continues. Look for black and gunmetal ones, like the Shiseido Eyelash Curler and the Best of Beauty Award-winning Surratt Beauty Relevée Lash Curler. Both are lightweight and won't leave your lashes awkwardly crimped.
Although I've perfected a mascara technique that replaces the need for an eyelash curler, Oquendo has alleviated my fear of them with this simple solution.
