Consider this tip from New York City-based bridal hairstylist Lauren Baxter: "I always say that a bride should look and feel like a more polished version of herself on her wedding day. If you're someone who always wears their hair down, and feel most comfortable with it down, then wear it down. Same goes if you always wear it up."
Of course, your wedding hairstyle can also be decided depending on your outfit. Danielle Diaz, New York City-based wedding specialist at Butterfly Studio Salon, says, "If you have an open back, perhaps wear your hair up to play off the details. Wearing something classic? Maybe a sleek bridal updo. Going more boho? Try something down and loose." The style of your veil — or whether you wear one at all — can also play a role in choosing the right look.
In short, bridal hairstyles should ideally complement three things: 1) your personality, 2) your ensemble, and 3) the aesthetic of your wedding.
Enlist the help of a hairstylist to do a trial after you've found your dress. "Hair-care wise, let them know once you've set a date, then they can come up with a timeline that best suits your needs," says Diaz. "I recommend a cut and color in the two weeks leading up to your wedding. Refreshing your color and touching up your face-framing is essential for most bridal looks."

"Start with an easy blowout to give hair movement by using Tigi Bed Head Superstar Queen for a Day Thickening Spray," says Cranford. Follow up by using a 3/4-inch or one-inch curling iron to add texture. Create a soft natural part and put hair up to your desired shape. "The key to this look is to not overthink it," advises Cranford. "It's nice when pieces fall out and it feels lived in — this is how you look like yourself."

This bun may seem similar to the classic topknot, but look a little closer, and you'll see that actor Melanie Liburd's hair is actually a fishtail braid spun into a bun. After shampooing and conditioning to soften and smooth her hair, Sturdivant-Drew used a blow-dryer to get it sleek and smooth. Next, "Use a flatiron to smooth the hairline only," she says. Your hairstylist can add in extensions to have enough length to work with if you need it. "Split your hair into four sections and start creating a fishtail braid, then twist it into an updo." Top it off with an embellished clip.

"If you are getting married in a woodsy environment or by the beach, this boho style is a great option," says Baxter of this braided updo. Start with your hair parted wherever you want, whether it's on the side or in the middle.
Then, reverse French braid your hair: Rather than crossing the hair on top, cross the outside strands underneath the middle strand. This will help the braid sit on top of the head. Bring the braid down towards the neck and continue braiding the length of the hair to the ends and then secure with a small, clear, plastic band. Repeat on the other side. At the nape of the neck, intertwine the two braids around the bottom, or twist them into a bun. Tucking the ends, then secure with elastic bands and bobby pins.

To get the look, Markuse says, "Put your hair up in a ponytail, separate it into two parts, twist each of them, and pin them with some bobby pins to create a bun." "To maintain this hairstyle, be sure to use a firm hold gel or hair lacquer to sleek the base of the bun," she says. "Pull your hair into a low ponytail and twist it clockwise, securing at the bottom with a small clear elastic band," says Baxter, who created this look. For a glamorous updo, try this high bun that resembles a rose known as the Rose Bun. To recreate the look, Redway suggests sectioning a ponytail into three parts before working them into loops. “The strands of hair should overlap themselves in a figure-eight, creating a double loop,” she says.

In the world of wedding updos, the French twist is a classic. This style is a slightly more undone version of the old fave, with loose ends lending an effortlessness to its otherwise polished feel. Consider this option if you want to draw attention to the back of your dress, suggests Baxter, who created this look.
She started by curling the hair with the GHD Curve Classic 1-inch Curl Iron then spraying it with a dry texture spray. "Start taking all of your hair and sweeping it back to the occipital bone. Gather it off-center to the left side," Baxter explains. "Use two bobby pins [and cross them] in an X to secure the hair on the one side all the way up to the middle of the head (or wherever you want your French twist to stop)."
Lightly backcomb the hair at the other side, then roll it to form the twist. Secure on the side the roll stops. Pull a few strands out around the bun and the front of the face to give the hair a messy texture. Hit it with a hair spray that's got a strong hold and glossy finish like the Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray or Göt 2b High Insta Hold spray.

The perfect chignon does exist, as evidenced by this look on Zazie Beetz. "This is for the woman who has a strong sense of self," says Cranford. Pulled back to the nape of the neck, this knot-style bun is a step up from a regular one, but it doesn't take away from the outfit. This is also a great option if you're planning on wearing a bold necklace and want it to be the center of attention. Add a statement hair comb or clip to complement your outfit as Beetz's stylist did here.

"The tousled chignon is perfect for a bride who has laid-back vibes, and it's also versatile enough to work well with most dress styles," says New York City-based hairstylist Sean Gallagher, who created this look on his wife, Amanda Kocis. The style works best on hair that's medium to long and can be a great option for brides who have thin hair.
Gallagher starts by prepping strands with mousse at the roots and a smoothing leave-in conditioner at the ends. "I started with hair extensions, because when it's pulled back and twisted, long hair tends to look more ballerina than couture — the extra hair comes in handy," he explains. After prep, pull the hair into a low ponytail with the front pieces out. Loosely twist the pony, then interlock open hairpins at the base of the ponytail, creating a loose chignon. Gently pull and loosen the pieces to create more texture and volume. "The trick is to keep it secure without being too tight," Gallagher notes.

"This is perfect for brides who are torn between an updo or [wearing it] all down," says Gallagher. First, prep the hair with heat protectant spray, and curl with a curling iron. Then, start forming the inverted crown braid (without fully sectioning the front) so it feels more organic. "Once I'm happy with the braid, I gently pull the pieces apart with my fingertips to widen the braid," Gallagher explains. Finish the look by topping the braid with baby's breath to make it extra ethereal.

"If you are looking for the best way to create long-lasting curls, take smaller sections and leave them to cool down before brushing," says Markuse.
