BPF headlamp bulb

I think we need more information.

A standard BPF headlamp usually has this type of bulb holder/retainer....

......therefore requires a bulb with this type of cap (whether QH or not)......

....but the bulb you have bought appears to be this (463).....

In the 1970s Lucas introduced the P36t 463. This was a 'half way house' between the British Pre-Focus bulbs and the later P45 & P43t. These had the British Pre-Focus fitting but with a H4 Halogen envelope in 12V 60/55W and the 3 spade push on connection.

....according to the Commando parts books, the '463' bulb was for the 'UK' halogen light unit option which also had a different lens/reflector and Lucas 553738 bulb adaptor, also, according to the parts books, the 'Continental' halogen headlamp option was different again, as that had a '472' (P43t) bulb.

Later Lucas halogen motorcycle headlamps (as fitted to late Triumphs) used '410' P45T bulbs:

Thank you L.A.B. for the brief explanation.

Everything you say is correct. But, it's impossible to fix the 463-type in place with any socket on the market.

That appears to be because the 463 bulb doesn't fit the [Edit] earlier BPF reflector unit but I am not sure why.

According to the parts books, the 463 bulb needs a Lucas 553738 adaptor, but that doesn't appear to have any means of retaining the bulb in the reflector, so I don't know exactly what held the 463 bulb in position.

Great. I've found this http://www.bobine.nl/jaguar/wp-content/ ... 554691.jpg

Probably this is the right one and I can use it as a sample for a self made adapter.

Or this http://www.holden.co.uk/displayproduct.asp?pCode=554691. It's more confident than the usual BPF sockets.
So, I think I'm using the P36d-Bulbs I have on the shelf and trash the 463 bulbs (a $12.-- value).
