SAN trasport mode with SAS shared storage

Hello everyone!

Guys, I have a design question!

We are planning an infrastructure of three new servers, a shared storage and a tape library.

The perspective scheme is depicted below:

20131028.jpg

We are going to implement an HA Vmware cluster on two servers along with dedicated BE media server.

The backup scheme is going to be D2D2T.

The question is: whether we will be able to use SAN transport mode according to the scheme or how it should be done properly?

Thank You!

Peter: check the VMware TN below...bear-in-mind this is for vSphere 5.5:

http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-51/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vddk.pg.doc%2FvddkDataStruct.5.5.htm...

If you check the SAN Transport Mode section, it lists SAN storage as FC, SAS or iSCSI-connected...so you should be fine.

Just check and make sure the same is for vSphere 5.5. If so, it would be supported for implementation once vSphere 5.5 is supported by BE 2012.

Thanks!

Hi,

The TN below details how it all works and how to set it up, but doesn't mention if this is an FC-based SAN only, or if SAS/iSCSI are also supported:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH155831

That will list all you need...

Thanks!

The diagram shows vSphere 5.5 which isn't supported by the current version of BE as of yet, though it would be in an upcoming update. Have a look @ this blog for further details - https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/backup-exec-2012-update-vsphere-55-support-and-r2-beta-registration

Guys, thank you very much!yes

Though my main concern is the usage of SAN transport mode with SAS protocol and SAS infrastructure...

And as far as I can see, vSphere 5.5 is going to be my second challenge...

Peter: I've yet to see documentation stating that a SAS-based SAN isn't supported. I don't see why not if the VC has access to the SAN as well...once vSphere 5.5 is supported, it's a simple case of testing this by selecting the SAN Transport Mode option in the backup job, unless this still has to be purchased, and is a case of going for SAS due to the cheaper price...?

Thanks!

Craig, you are quite right - the matter of the price/performance factor is on the first place. And we don't need scalability or high-end DR solution...

Peter: vSphere 5.5 is now supported with BE 2012 (not sure which version you use as you never tagged that originally):

Thanks!
