June 14, 2016 – For the letter I in our A-to-Z countdown to the 2016 Tour de France (#TDF2016) we’ve chosen Miguel INDURAIN, the first man to win the Tour five years in a row, from 1991 to 1995.

Here, Induráin is competing in the 48-kilometer stage 19 time trial of the 1993 Tour. The Spaniard won that Tour by five minutes over Switzerland’s Tony Rominger—though the Swiss beat Induráin into second place by 42 seconds in this stage, one of the rare occasions when he lost a Tour time trial.

What’s of interest in this image from 23 years ago is the then-current aero-bike technology that allowed the front wheel to be far smaller than the rear wheel, while the aero-bars and arm rests wouldn’t pass muster today.
