Angkor Wat
Watch the magnificent sunrise here – initially constructed as a Hindu temple, the Angkor Wat was the state temple of Khmer Dynasty. The temple was built by King Suryavarman II during his rule in 11th century. It was dedicated to Lord Vishnu. After his death the temple slowly transformed into a Buddhist worship centre under King Jayavarman VII. The iconic temple is the largest religious monument in the world, and has occupied a prestigious title of one of the Seven Wonders of the World in the past. The temple complex is surrounded by a large moat, creating a giant rectangle. The central towers dominate the compound, representing Mount Meru from Hindu mythology. The temple walls are decorated with carvings of more than 3000 apsaras (heavenly nymphs). The intricately carved bas reliefs depicting scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata will leave you speechless. The best time to visit this temple is during the sunrise, when sun casts its first rays on the imposing facade of Angkor. Sit inside one of the side galleries, and soak in the grandeur of this Khamer masterpiece. Angkor Wat glowing under the break of the dawn is a sight to behold!
