What Are Freckles?

Some people like their freckles, while others may be more bothered by their appearance with freckles. A common request among people with freckles is the cosmetic improvement of the skin. On the other hand, freckles are desirable by some people who like the special character or uniqueness these give them. The word freckle comes from the Middle English freken, which, in turn, came from the Old Norse freknur, meaning “freckled”.

Freckles are small brown spots on your skin, often in areas that get sun exposure and UV rays. In most cases, freckles are harmless. They form as a result of the overproduction of melanin, which is responsible for skin and hair color (pigmentation). Overall, freckles come from ultraviolet (UV) radiation stimulation.

How Do Freckles Look Like?

Freckles are flat, beige, brown circular spots that typically are the size of the head of a metal nail.  Most freckles are generally uniform in color but can vary somewhat in color — they may be reddish, yellow, tan, light brown, brown, or black — but they are basically slightly darker than the surrounding skin. Freckles are often in multiple numbers on your skin, are often 1-2mm size on your skin. If they are bigger than 1-2mm they are considered as another form of hyperpigmentation.

What Causes Freckles?

Sun exposure and sunburns are the usual causes of freckles. Freckles can also appear as a  result of a combination of genetic predisposition (inheritance) and sun exposure. Freckles can appear on anyone who doesn’t protect themselves from UV rays. They appear on your face, the back of your hands, and your upper body. Being most common amongst people with lighter skin tones and hair color. People of Caucasian and Asian descent are more prone to freckles. Very darkly pigmented individuals are unlikely to develop freckles.
