Pointers Finish Fifth at WIAC Conference Championships

REEDSBURG, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's golf team finished in fifth place at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships (presented by Culver's). UWSP accumulated a weekend team-best score of 344 to secure a top-five finish in the conference, 21 strokes behind fourth-place UW-Platteville.

Location: Reedsburg Country Club, Reedsburg, Wis.
UWSP: 5th out of 8
 
Top UWSP Individual: Kate Downie (Hortonville, WIs./Hortonville) finished the weekend as the Pointers top golfer, finishing tied for 15th place as she remained consistent throughout the weekend with a top-15 placement. She shot an 84 (+12) on day three to shoot a combined 252 on the weekend, finishing six strokes away from a top-10 finish.
Notables: Rae Barwick (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) matched her round two total on day three as she shot an 87 (+15) to finish tied for 37th. Bree Downie (Hortonville, Wis./Hortonville) finished directly behind Barwick, shooting her best mark of the weekend, 85 (+13) to slot in tied for 39th. Downie would also be recognized on the all-sportsmanship team. Andrea Tietz (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) had a bounce back performance in round three as she shot an 88 (+16) to move into a tie for 46th place. Rounding out the Pointers golfers, Jenny Marshall (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton), who shot an improved mark of 91 (+19) in day three, finished tied for 52nd.
 
Tournament Highlights
Top Team: UW-Whitewater won the 2023 WIAC Conference Championships after posting a team score of 315 in round three to ensure their 18-stroke victory over second-place UW-La Crosse. The Warhawks had four golfers within the top-10. Head Coach Andrea Wieland was also awarded the Kwik Trip Coach of the Year.
Top Individual: Abbey Filipiak of UW-Stout was the top finisher in the 2023 WIAC Conference Championships. Filipiak shaved four strokes off of her round two score to shoot a 73 (+1) which ensured her victory. Filipiak would be awarded the Kwik Trip Player of the Year, Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete award and a spot on the all-conference first team.
