60th ANNIVERSARY December 1968 D URING the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, Glenn Sundby was granted an interview with new Olympic all-around champion Sawao Kato in the Olympic Village. Wrote Sundby: “We were limited in time as Sawao Kato had qualified for many of the [event finals] that evening, and his coach wanted him to rest as much as possible. Unfortunately, that evening, after three events, Sawao developed a muscle spasm in his back during the Long Horse warm-up and could not compete in LH, PB and HB. In the spirit of fun during the MG interview, Yukio Endo pointed out to Sawao in the MG Tokyo Olympic report that he scored better in ’64 than Kato in ’68 (Endo 115.95, Kato 115.90).” March 1975 December 1969 International GYMNAST April 2016 45
