MISS EARTH ROMANIA
GEORGIANA CATALINA POPESCU

DESCRIBE YOUR CHILDHOOD/GROWING YEARS
I was born in the city of Pitesti and grew up in a very loving family, being the only child of my parents, they focused on my education and on the fact that I should not lack anything. I fondly remember all the holidays at the sea and in the mountains with my parents, uncles and cousins. My family always instilled in me a care for the environment and nature, because every weekend I went for a run through the forest or went on an expedition through the mountains.

I liked it most when hiking on the Transfagarasan, which is a Romanian road that starts in Bascov commune, Argeș county near the city of Pitesti, crossing the Fagăraș Mountains, the highest in Romania, which are part of the Southern Carpathians, or when I spent Christmas with my parents and all my relatives in Rucar, a mountain area very close to my hometown.

WHAT IS YOUR MEMORABLE MOMENT?
A memorable and fairly recent moment that happened was about a year ago, when I was volunteering in a foundation, and the war had just started in Ukraine. The foundation decided that it is necessary to go and give a helping hand to those who come to the borders of our country.

I brought them clothes, food, water, and being a lot of refugees from Ukraine, they also needed a shelter to live in. I consulted with the members of the foundation and with my family and decided that I could take a family of Ukrainian refugees with 2 children to live for an indefinite period at one of my parents' apartments. It was a memorable moment because I saw the joy of people, especially children, that they receive help and that people care about them.

ANY SPECIAL STORIES OR FACTS ABOUT YOUR FAMILY?
My family is very important to me, I grew up in a very warm and loving environment, and my parents always made sure that I didn't miss anything and put education, respect, care and love first. At the same time, my parents instilled in me from a young age to take care of the environment and to understand how important it is for me to contribute positively to a better future and planet.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNUSUAL THING YOU HAVE EVER DONE?
The most unusual thing I did was in a project called "Recreation in nature" in the mountains and one activity was to go paragliding, I really liked the idea and I didn't regret it because the landscape was great, between the mountains and above a river that really made me connect with the environment and the experience was unforgettable.

WHAT TIPS CAN YOU SHARE TO PROMOTE ECOTOURISM & CLIMATE CHANGE?
Everything starts from our upbringing and education, we must be aware from an early age that we need a healthy environment to have a healthy life.

We can promote ecotourism in many ways, more precisely to contribute to the protection of natural areas, visiting natural settlements and connecting with the environment, for a more pleasant environment.

The effects of climate change are increasingly visible internationally, whether it is intense heat waves, droughts that destroy agricultural production, floods or threats to biodiversity caused by wildfires. These aspects show that climate change is already occurring and is accelerating rapidly due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere at a rate that far exceeds the natural capacity of our earth's terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems to absorb them.

We can relate to the need for firm action both from governments, citizens and the private sector in the direction of drastically reducing emissions through new solutions and technologies, and simultaneously for practical adaptation to new realities. For example, we can save energy at home, use the personal car less and use the bicycle or walking more, recycle correctly and responsibly or reuse and repair.

WHAT MAKES YOU PROUD OF YOUR COUNTRY?
What makes me proud of my country, Romania, is the fact that it enjoys various landforms, varied ecosystems, centuries-old forests or pastures of a special natural value, a fact that favors the existence of a great diversity and wealth of natural species and the the largest wet reserve in Europe called the Danube Delta, with a formidable fauna and flora that shelters an impressive number of bird species that fascinate Romanian citizens and tourists from all over the world.

At the same time, agriculture occupies an important place in Romania's economy and has considerable prospects for development, thanks to the favorable pedoclimatic conditions and the potential in the sphere of ecological production. Organic agriculture is a dynamic system in Romania, registering an upward trend recently. Romania is among the main exporters of corn and wheat worldwide, due to the size of the available agricultural area.

My country is in a continuous process of development for a resilient sustainable future and people are more and more aware and care more about the conservation, cleaning and care of the environment. In recent years, great emphasis has been placed on recycling and caring for the environment in any form.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVOCACY?
My advocacy is to campaign for the preservation and protection of our environment and especially in my country, to be able to bring a change and be a voice for my generation to make them aware of how important Mother Earth is and how necessary it is to be careful with our fauna and flora because our health is put at risk if we do not respect our environment and our land.

At the same time I put a lot of emphasis on raising an alarm signal on the illegal deforestation of forests and leaving waste to chance without having an education in this regard.

Each of us is responsible for our personal actions, and certain facts can decide everyone's future, and that is why it is important to realize that the environment is our home for all of us and we must take care of it.
