Occupational Therapy can help children with various needs to improve their cognitive, physical, sensory, and motor skills to enhance their self-esteem and sense of accomplishment. Our therapists will work to strengthen fine motor skills, balance, coordination, and sensory processing skills based on each individual’s needs. We can also address issues pertaining to under and over reactive touch, taste, sound, lights, or other stimuli; poor concentration; attention to tasks; awkwardness with motor movement; poor handwriting; difficulty school performance; difficulty with transitions; or difficulty with self-help skills (feeding, toileting, dressing, etc.).
Deficits and impairments can be present at birth or can be a result of injury or incident during any span of
a child’s development. Our services often include transition-based services that help with the process into adulthood with a goal of maximizing safety and independence for accessing the community, work, or volunteer opportunities. We heavily address functional and daily living skills. We also strive to correlate services with counselors and other providers that are serving individuals who are impacted by trauma.

Recreational Therapy (RT), also known as theraputic recreation, is a systemic process that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery, and well-being. The purpose is to improve or maintain physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual functioning in order for the patient to participate and maintain optimal levels of independence, productivity, well-being, and quality of life. Recreational Therapy can help to reduce depression, stress, anxiety in clients while helping them build confidence and appropriately socialize in their community.
How is Recreational Therapy different from other therapies?
RT uses recreational modalities such as arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, music, and community outings for the use of treatment.
RT incorporates the client’s interests and the client’s family and/or community to make the therapy process more meaningful and relevant.
RT’s weave the concept of healthy living into treatment to ensure not only improved functioning, but also to enhance independence and successful involvement in all aspects of life.
We are excited to have added an RT to our Kidz at Play Therapy team. She has previous experience working with adolecents with psychiatric disorders, autism, and mental health disorders.
